Iceland - Summer 2013

Location: Vatnaskarð, Iceland

Position: Research Assistant to Associate Professor of Earth Sciences, Ben Edwards

 

Goals:                                                                  

  • Classified approximately 500 pillow lava units with trend, plunge, dimensions, vesicularity, and mineralogy

  • Collected rock samples along the quarry walls for geochemistry work in the laboratory

  • Analyzed thin sections of igneous rock with cathodoluminescent microscope 

  • Created detailed maps of quarry walls using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and GIS technology
